It is with great satisfaction that I learned yesterday that the salvage of the wreckage of 78 squadron Halifax III LV905 will start on 5 September. LV905 crashed near the town of Hank on 24/25 May 1944 after it bombed the railway yards in Aachen. The whole crew was killed in the crash. This was the first major research project I undertook in 1986, at the request of a nephew of one of the crew. After years of research we concluded that five of the crew were still with the plane, although they were officially buried at Jonkerbos Cemetery in Nijmegen. Then a dedicated group of local residents took over the struggle to get the plane salvaged. They started the 'Foundation Salvage Halifax 1944' and finally last year they succeeded in convincing the local government and raising 25.000 euros as their contribution in the costs. The crew of the LV905 will be added to this site at a later date. I will also keep everybody updated on the progress and results of the salvage. Visit the website of the Foundation by clicking here.

A gifted writer, who manages to take you into the frontlines with him in down to earth language and dialogues that strike me a the most authentic I have read.

6 May 2005

I am fortunate to receive many e-mails from people visiting this website. I want to thank all who contact me to comment on the site, ask questions, provide information, etc. Your interest is very appreciated. Many people write to provide me with information and photo's of their friends, fathers, brothers and buddies to include here. Without your help this tribute can not grow into what it is becoming. It is an wonderful way to show the faces behind the names on the grave markers and I am thankful to all who share their memories, stories and pictures of the men commemorated on this site. Also thanks to the people who write with requests or again providing information about an individual or incident. Every request equals an interesting journey into the story of another man, crew or unit. Sometimes that search uncovers a wealth of information and gives us an comprehensive and illustrated story, a past to remember. Other times it takes time and luck to uncover that tale behind a name. Until that time the story only reads a few lines with basic facts for information. Name, rank, date of death.

Through the years I have come to be bequeathed with and 'know' many people through this website and e-mail. I count myself fortunate to see many contacts grown into looser and closer ties that, I hope, are mutually pleasant and beneficiary.

I do my best to reply to everyone as soon as circumstances permit. In the last few weeks I have not been able to keep up with all the communications, due to my studies, family, and the ceremonies to commemorate 60 years of Liberation. Although circumstances will keep me away from working on the site much of the coming weeks, I will respond to e-mails as soon as I can. I do urge people to keep writing.

I also hope to update the site several times in the coming weeks.  Although I have a lot of information, etc. on many individuals waiting to be added, time is the main constraint here. Nonetheless, I hope to start adding more people to the site as well.

So, keep checking in!
