Sapper John Keeble (RE), from Crail in Fife, was attached to the 2nd Regiment Special Air Service. He was killed on 15 April 1945 near Putten, when his patrol ran into a patrol of the Dutch resistance and a firefight broke out. Sapper Keeble is buried at Putten General Cemetery.

Also added Schipper Gerardus Smits from Vlaardingen. He was aboard the Dutch minesweeper Hs Ms Marken which struck a mine on 20 May 1944. Schipper Smits lies buried in Castricum.

Pfc Arthur Courson, from Akron, Ohio, was probably a musician with the 19th Special Service Company. He died in a car accident on 30 April 1945 near Beckam, Germany. Today he rests at Margraten.

P/O Arthur Johnson of 166 squadron was a veteran of 56 missions, when he was shot down on a mission to Essen on 28 May 1943. His Wellington crashed near Hengelo, were he and his crew are buried. Thanks to his son, Trevor Johnson, for providing information.

Also updated the pages of W/C Leslie James and P/O Arthur Adair. They belonged to the 9 squadron crew that crashed near Leens on 21 June 1942. They are buried in Leens.

F/L William Anderson, from Woodlawn, Ontario, Canada, was a spitfire pilot with 412 Squadron. He lost his life under unknown circumstances on Good Friday, 30 March 1945. He was flying patrol over the northern front in Holland. He crashed near Zelhem, where he is still buried today.

P/O John Laird from Montreal, Canada, was an observer with 424 squadron. He was lost on operations on 23 April 1944, on a mission to Dusseldorf. His plane crashed near Goirle, where the crew was initially buried. After the war, the Canadians of the crew were reburied at Bergen-op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery. Many thanks to Mr. Richard Burgess who provided information and pictures.

Added Pvt Salvatore Alio from Allentown, PA. He was with the 104th US Infantry Division and was killed in the battle for Bitterfeld, Germany on 20 April 1945. He is buried at Margraten.

Also added F/L George Sheldrick from Chatham, Ontario, Canada. He was a pilot on a mosquito with 418 squadron and was killed when his plane crashed near Putten on 9 March 1945. His navigator was F/O Francis Klapkew from Galt, Ontario. He was also killed in the crash. Both men are buried at Putten General Cemetery.

Updated WOII Neil Stewart's page. Neil was an air gunner with 428 Squadron and lost his life on 20 February 1944, when his plane crashed into the IJsselmeer. His whole crew died in the crash. Many thanks to Mr. Al Stewart for provinding additional information and pictures of Neil and his family.

Updated Sgt Wilfred Turley's page. Wilfred was born in 1915 in England, but his family moved to Canada. In 1940, he joined the R.C.A.F. and was posted to 407 Squadron. He was killed on an anti shipping mission on 15 December 1941. He is buried at Usquert. Thanks to Heather Clitheroe for providinig the picture and information about her great uncle.

Pfc Johnnie Kilgore from Jasper, AL, was with F Company, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. A veteran of the D-Day jump, he was killed on 21 September 1944 near St. Oedenrode. He rests at Coal City Baptist Church Cemetery in Jasper, Alabama. Thanks to Mr. David ORear who provided the information and picture of his great uncle.

On 12 October 2008 the Dutch Air Force Salvage Team will start salvaging what remains of Mosquito PZ174-YP of 23 squadron. This Mosquito, piloted by F/L Francis Grimwood with navigator P/O Frederick Woodman crashed near Woubrugge on 22 July 1944. Both crew members were killed in the crash. The project group has launched a website (in Dutch) with a lot of information on both the plane, its crew, the crash, and the salvage itself. Visit the website at www.jacobswoude-bergingmosquito.nl

Cpl Carman Ladner from Maine, was with A Company, 501st PIR, 101st Airborne Division. He was killed on 24 September 1944 near Eerde, when a ammonition truck he was unloading was hit by a German tank. He remains Missing In Action to this day and is commemorated at the Margraten Memorial.

Updated Sgt Kenneth Preston's page. He was an observer with 150 squadron and was shot down and killed on 6 June 1942 on a mission to Emden. He is buried at Kollum.

Also updated Sgt Lionel Walter's page. He was an engineer with 424 squadron and was killed on 23 april 1944. He is buried in Goirle.

Added Pvt Jadie Hodge from Moyadan, North Carolina. He joined the army just after his 18th birthday and became a paratrooper with the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He was killed, two weeks after his 19th birthday, on 20 September 1944, during operation Market Garden. Thanks to Mr. Aart van Uden for the pictures of Jadie and his grave in Sandy Ridge, N.C. where he rests today.

Sgt Howard Chatelaine was a ball turret gunner on a B17 bomber with the 306th Bomb Group. He and his crew were shot down over Epe on 11 January 1944. Only one of the crew survived. Sgt Chatelaine is now buried at Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Many thanks to Mrs. Sue Quinn-Morris for the pictures of his grave and information about Howard.

2Lt Marcum Thomas was the co-pilot on this bomber. He was from Missouri and is buried at Margraten.

Updated F/O Ian Stirton's page. He was a bomb aimer with 429 squadron and was killed when his Wellington was shot down near Harlingen on 21 January 1943. He is buried in Usquert.

On 29 July 1942, 75 Squadron lost 6 Wellingtons on a mission to Hamburg. One came down in the IJsselmeer. Killed in this crash were New Zealanders FS Martin Byrne (navigator) and FS John Gilbertson (pilot) and Sgt William Titcomb from London. He was an air gunner. Both New Zealanders are buried at Amsterdam New Eastern Cemetery, while Sgt Titcomb is buried at Harderwijk.

After coming back from holiday and a very busy period, I will start to add men to the site, update pages and respond to a large number of e-mails I have received the last few months. I have information on hundreds of men to add and update quite a few pages as well. Thanks to the help of many volunteers in the United States I am now also able to drastically expand the number of Americans on this site that were killed in The Netherlands but were later buried in the U.S.

F/O George "Pete" Langille, from Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, was a Typhoon pilot with 193 squadron. In July 1944 he was one of the Typhoons that shot up Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's staff car in Normandy, wounding the famous general.

George was killed on 25 November 1944 in a mission to support ground troops. His Typhoon crashed near Putten, where he is buried. Many thanks to Tim Darling for the picture and information.

Also added Pvt Preston Edmonds from New Jersey. He was with the 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division and was killed on 6 October 1944 during the German counter attack near Opheusden. He was 19 years old and is now buried at Beverly National Cemetery, New Jersey. Thanks to "Historical Passion" for the picture of his grave, and to the 506th Airborne Infantry Regiment Association (Airmobile-Air Assault) for the picture of Preston and three of his buddies.

Sgt William Strachan from Simcoe, Ontario, Canada was an air gunner with 115 Squadron. on 7 july 1941, on a mission to Munster, his crew attempted to crash land into the Waddensea after an engagement with a German night fighter, but crashed, killing all of the crew. He and his pilot, New Zealander Sgt Oswald Matthews from Wellington, are buried at Schiermonnikoog Vredenburg Cemetery.

Also added P/O Anthony Carter, a pilot with 106 Squadron. On 21 December 1941 he and his crew were on a Intruder mission to Germany when they were shot down. P/O Carter was the only one to die. He is buried at Schoonebeek General Cemetery.

Updated Pvt Everett Rice's page. Many thanks to Mr. Jack Rogers, Everett's buddy in H Company, 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Mr. Rogers provided pictures of Everett and an account of the action in which he was killed, in the Huertgen Forest. Everett is buried at Margraten American Military Cemetery.

Pvt Victory Havens was born in in 1918 in Michigan. He was with I Company, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division and was wounded at a road block in Beek, the Netherlands on 20 September 1944. He died of his wounds the next day. After the war, Pvt Havens was reburied in Beaverton Cemetery, Michigan.

Pfc Thomas Kulick was from Pennsylvania. He was with the 978th Engineer Maintenance Company. Pfc Kulick died in an accident on 12 May 1945. He is buried at the American Cemetery at Margraten. Information was kindly provided by Mr. Theron Snell.

Major Gordon Newsum was Commanding Officer of "D" Company, 4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed on 17 November 1944 by a shell when checking out the objective of his company's next operation. He is buried at Nederweert War Cemetery.

Four Allied airmen are buried at Voorst (Zwollerkerspel) General Cemetery;

Wing Commander Graeme MacDonald from Canterbury, New Zealand was CO of 4 Squadron. On 28 April 1943 he went on a Ranger mission and was killed when he shot up a barge filled with ammonition. The subsequent blast and debri hit his mustang and he crashed.

Sgt Aubrey Deere was a pilot of a 106 Squadron Hampden that was lost on a mission to Bremen. He was the only one of a crew of four to die in the plane.

FS Ernest Peek from Walthamstow, Essex flew mosquitos with 540 Squadron, a Photographic Reconnaissance Unit. He took the first pictures of a V2 rocket at the Germans research and test base at Peenemunde in June 1943. On 24  September 1943 he was shot down near Zwolle. He and his navigator, PO James Williams, are buried at Voorst.

Pvt George Scaife (picture) was from Mather, Manitoba, Canada. He was with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and was killed on 19 August 1942 during the Dieppe raid. His body washed ashore on the Dutch coast and he is buried at Bergen War Cemetery.

Also added Craftsman Henry Donkin. Nothing is known about him, except that he was with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers an died on 31 July 1945. He is buried at Castricum Protestant Cemetery.

Marine Frank Wild was from London. He was killed on 28 January 1945 in the fighting for Belle Island, near Roermond. He rests at Nederweert War Cemetery with several other marines who died in this battle.

Canadians F/Sgt Roman Grabek from Nordegg, Alberta and Sgt George Coldron from Penticton, British Columbia, were with 14 Operational Training Unit when they participated in a raid on Bremen, Germany. Their Hampden was shot down and both are now buried at Stadskanaal General Cemetery.

Today is National Memorial Day in Holland. We remember those who died for our freedom, foreign and domestic, military and civilian. We stand silent for two minutes at 20.00 to commemorate and remember. We remember their sacrife because we live in freedom today.

Pvt Jasper Vandenbergh from Albany, NY, was with the 801st Tank Destroyer Battalion. His unit was overrun by Kampfgruppe Peipper in Honsfeld, Belgium on 17 December 1944, on the second day of the Ardennes offensive. Pvt Vandenbergh was probably killed in the fighting with this SS unit.

Being of Dutch descent, he was reburied after the war at Nieuw-Loosdrecht Rading Cemetery at the request of his family.

Pvt William Foster from Glebe Point, N.S.W., Australia was with 5 Australian General Hospital. He and his unit were captured in Greece. He spent over 3 years as a PoW and was shot dead when he tried to escape on 14 April 1945. He is buried at Nederweert War Cemetery.

Updated T4 Joseph Mero's page with two pictures of his reburial at Long Island National Cemetery in 1949. Many thanks to his sister Margaret for these. Also added a picture of his grave which was kindly provided by GLENN of findagrave.com. Joseph was with the 101st Airborne Division and was killed in action on 9 October 1944.

Tec4 Emmanuel Foster from Bingham, Maine was with I Company, 508th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division. Born in Canada, he was not yet an American citizen when he joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He participated in Market Garden and was killed in action in Beek on 20 September 1944, while defending a road block during a German counter attack. He is buried at Bingham Village Cemetery, Bingham, Maine.

Updated 2Lt Byron Balk's page with his picture, courtesy of his sister, Mrs. Joan Anton. Lt Balk was with the 104th Infantry Division, the "Timberwolves", and was KIA near Zundert on 26 October 1944, in the unit's first action.

Thanks to many volunteers on findagrave.com, over the last few months I have received many grave pictures of American servicemen  that were killed in the Netherlands, who after the war were reinterred in the US. I will be adding these to the site as well.

Pvt Edward Matthews, from New Jersey, was with B company, 508th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division. He was killed on 21 September 1944, while going on a reconnaissance during a German counter attack near Wyler, Germany. His actions helped prevent the attack to succeed. Pvt Matthews is buried at Beverly National Cemetery, New Jersey.

While browsing the internet for information, I came across a great site dedicated to the men and women who died while serving in Special Forces units of different countries. Specialforcesroh.com is very highly recommended and I added a link to the links page.

Sgt Lionel Walters from Goulders Green, Middlesex was an Flight Engineer with 424 squadron. He was shot down on 23 April 1944 on a mission to Dusseldorf. All but one of the crew perished in the crash. Sgt Walters, born Cohen, rests at Goirle Roman Catholic Cemetery. Many thanks to Sgt Walters son, Mr. Barrie Walters.

On 23 January 1943 an 460 squadron Lancaster crash landed near Bakhuizen. Air gunner P/O Stuartson Methven, from Belgrave, Victoria, Australia, died in the plane. His bomb aimer, Sgt John Conlon, from Orange, N.S.W., Australia did bail out but probably drowned in the sea. Both men are buried at Bakhuizen Roman Catholic Cemetery. The rest of the crew survived.

Also added a unit page for Australia and a unit page for 460 Squadron RAAF.

A while ago, Bart Droog contacted me about the S.S. Pacific. Bart also has an interest in Allied casualties and has many pages written about them on his weblog and website. Thanks to his research I was able to update the S.S. Pacific page. Bart also helped me with other information which I will add to the site later. I want to urge people to visit Bart's weblog and Page (weblog is in Dutch) to read the articles he has written on Allied war casualties.

Also added a page about S.S. Joseph Swan and the S.S. Greenland.

Added F/S Clement Buckeridge from Bundamba, Queensland, Australia.
He was with 460 squadron RAAF when he was shot down on a mission to Oberhausen in the early morning of 15 June 1943. Only one of the crew survived. F/S Buckeridge is buried with his crew at Amsterdam New Eastern Cemetery

Also added his pilot, 23 year old Sgt Roger Crook, from Reading, England and the 23 year old air gunner, Sgt Gordon Fletcher, from Foulsham, Norfolk.

Another air gunner on this crew was Australian F/S Donald Grant from Orange, N.S.W.

Sgt Charles Grimshaw from Bradford was the wireless operator on this crew. At age 35, he was one of the older men at the squadron. The navigator was F/S Stanley Marriage from Coolamon, N.S.W. He was 31.

Added Kpt Kazimierz Żerebecki. He was a navigator with 305 (Polish) squadron. Not much is known about him. He died when his Wellington was shot down on 19 June 1941 and crashed near Lutjebroek. One other crew member also died in the crash. Today Kpt Żerebecki is buried at Bergen War Cemetery.

Updated S/Sgt Eugene Darter's page with the story of the 2007 memorial service which was held on Texel island for the crew of the Lonesome Polecat II, 95th Bomb Group. Many members of Eugene's family were in attendance. This was provided by Eugene's brother, Michael, who has exhaustively researched the crash and has written a book about it.

Also updated the page of Sgt Alexander Elder of 214 squadron. Thanks to Mr. Peter Forrester for providing additional information.

Updated F/O Arthur Morlidge's page. F/O Morlidge was 21 when he was shot down in his 419 squadron Wellington in October 1942. He lies buried at Uden War Cemetery. Many thanks to his sister Kathy for pointing out some errors and sending additions to his story.

Also added F/S James Smith, from Prospect, South Australia. He was with 218 squadron when his Stirling bomber went missing over the North Sea on 23 June 1943, killing all but one of the crew. F/S Smith is buried at Castricum Protestant Cemetery. F/S Smith is buried in a communal grave with an unknown soldier whose body washed ashore on the Castricum coast on 2 august 1944.

F/S George Labiuk from Kalyna, Saskatchewan, was an air gunner on F/S Smith's Stirling. He lies buried at Amsterdam New Eastern Cemetery.
