William Donald Francis Annan was born in 1920. He was the son of Fredrick Andrew John Annan and of Annie Isabell Annan (nee MacRae). He lived in
Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.

He became an air gunner with the Royal New Zealand Air Force and was sent to the United Kingdom early on in the war.

He joined 75 (RNZAF) squadron, flying out of Feltwell, Norfolk.

On 26 June 1940, Sgt Annan' screw, captained by F/O Coleman, was scheduled to fly a mission to Kassel. It is thought their Wellington IC R3235 was brought down over the IJsselmeer. The bodies of all six crew washed ashore and are buried in Amsterdam. That of F/O Coleman washed ashore on 3 August 1940.
