John Dowds was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Dowds, of Musselburgh, Midlothian.

He became an air gunner with the Royal Air Force.

He joined 75 (RNZAF) squadron, flying out of Feltwell, Norfolk. He was with the crew of F/O William Coleman DFC.

On 26 June 1940, Sgt Neville's crew, captained by F/O Coleman, was scheduled to fly a mission to Kassel. It is thought their Wellington IC R3235 was brought down over the IJsselmeer. The bodies of all six crew washed ashore and are buried in Amsterdam. That of F/O Coleman washed ashore on 3 August 1940.
