Reuben Acton Scragg was born on
24 March 1917 in Napier. He was the son of
Harold and Mary Scragg, of Napier, Hawke's
Bay, New Zealand. He was married to Esther
Dorothy Scragg and lived
in Napier.
He joined the
Royal New Zealand Air Force and after
training, was sent to England. There he
became an Observer with 12 Squadron, based
at Binbrook, Lincolnshire.

and his crew participated in a raid on Essen
on 9 March 1942.

At 20.39,
they took off in Wellington II W5442B. Their
captain was P/O R H Buchanan. Their plane
was brought down by flak and crashed at
22.04 near the Kagerweg near Beverwijk.
Three of the crew, P/O Buchanan, Sgt Chedd
and Sgt Arnold, survived and became PoWs.
The other three, including FS Scragg, were killed and are buried at
Bergen War Cemetery.
