Not much is known about
this crew. They probably took part in some
missions against Italian targets that the
squadron was involved in in November. On 17
December 1942, Bomber command sent 27
bombers to eight smaller towns in Germany. The crew partcipated in
a mission to Soltau.
They took off in
Lancaster W4266 VN-N from their base at
Skellingthorpe. The plane was first hit by
Flak and shortly after attacked by a night
fighter, who shot the plane down. It crashed
600 metres North of Haerst (Overijssel), and
4 km North East of Zwolle.
Three of the crew
managed to jump from the stricken plane.
P/O
William James Farrelly, Sgt J.D. Chapman and
F/Sgt J.H. Mitchell were taken prisoner.
The rest of the crew
died in the crash.
