Not much is known about Arthur James Fitchett.

He was a navigator flying with 51 Squadron.

51 squadron at the time flew halifax bombers out of Snaith. On 24 June 1943, P/O Fitchett and his crew were detailed to participate in a mission against the German city of Wuppertal. P/O Fitchett's crew consisted of:

51 Squadron

The crew took off in Halifax JD250 MH-R from Snaith at 23.13. They were intercepted over Holland, just after they crossed the coast, by Ofw Karl-Georg Pfeiffer of IV./NJG1, who proceeded to shoot down the Halifax. It crashed into the North Sea, possibly trying to fly back to England.

The bodies of P/O Fitchett, F/O MacKenzie and Sgt Murdock washed ashore and are buried at different cemeteries in The Netherlands. The remaining crew members remain missing and are commemorated at the Runnymede memorial.
