Lloyd Lawrence Aikenhead

Flight Sergeant Lloyd Lawrence Aikenhead was from Greenway, Manitoba and was married to Muriel Aikenhead.

He was an air observer (bomb aimer) on a Hudson bomber with 407 Sqn. Coastal Command. 407 Sqn was tasked with anti-shipping operations that involved daring mast-height attacks on enemy convoys off the Frisian Islands and the Dutch coast. It was acclaimed as the most successful strike squadron in Coastal Command during the latter part of 1941 and early 1942.

On the night of 20/21 June 1942 five Hudsons were detailed to attack enemy shipping near Terschelling. One Hudson attacked a ship at 01.03, three others returned without bombing and the fifth, a Hudson flown by Pilot Officer Little and with Flight Sergeant Aikenhead as bomb aimer was lost.

It is not known how the Hudson was lost. Flight Sergeant Aikenhead was recovered from the sea and buried in Delfzijl. P/O Little is is still Missing In Action and mentioned on the Runnymede Memorial.
