Private

Bolton Grant

7 May 1945

Nederweert

Bolton Grant was from South Africa. He was a private with the Royal Natal Carbineers who fought in the North African and Italian campaigns. The unit was part of the 12th South African Motor Brigade belonging to the 6th South African Armoured Division.

It is thought that Private Grant was taken prisoner by the Germans either in North Africa or Italy and died while in a German POW camp. A possibility is that the US Graves Registration found his remains buried in or near a POW camp and took them to Margraten to be identified.

All Commonwealth soldiers that were recovered by the US Graves Registration and brought to Margraten were re-interred in Nederweert War Cemetery in 1947. Pvt. Bolton Grant was probably one of them. Research into his life and death is ongoing. The date of death in these cases was put at 7 May 1945.

Pvt. Bolton Grant is buried in Nederweert War Cemetery, grave IV. D. 9.
