Alexander Robertson Pirie was born in 1886. He was a Master in the Merchant Navy and served on the Steam Ship (SS) Joseph Swan.

SS Joseph Swan was carrying coal from Blyth and part of an convoy to London. The convoy was attacked off Cromer on 4 September 1940 by German Schnellboote. Schnellboote S-18, under command of Kaptän Georg Christiansen, sank the SS Joseph Swan with a torpedo North East of Great Yarmouth.

'SSNew Lambton' (2,709t) steamer, from Hartlepool,'SS Fulham V' (1,562t) steamer, from South Shields and  'SS Corbrook' (1,792t) steamerfrom Seaham. Master Alexander Pirie washed ashore the Groningen coast and was buried in Uithuizermeeden.
