Carel Everhard graaf (count) van Limburg Stirum,  nicknamed "Eef", was born in Bloemendaal (Overveen) on 22 December 1917.

He was a Kornet (Warrant Officer) with the 4th Regiment Huzaren (Hussars) (2-I-4 RH) of the Dutch Cavalry. In May 1940, the unit had six  armoured cars to its disposal as well as bikes and horses. They are stationed on the Veluwe, east off the main Dutch defense line called the Grebbeberg. The task of the 4th regiment was to stop the German advance.


IV Regiment Huzaren

Kornet van Limburg Stirum is attached to  II-3 R.H. This Squadron barricades the Arnhem - Ede road in the morning of 10 May and around 12.30 they fall back to a defense line between Ede and De Klomp.  Kornet van Limburg Stirum leads a motorized patrol, which also consists of Corporal Bonkerk and Hussar Dijkers. They remain in a defensive position near restaurant De Ginkel in the village with the same name. Late in the afternoon the patrol is is attacked by advance units of the German 207th Infantry Division. All three are killed in the fight that ensues.

In May 1949, Kornet van Limburg Stirum is posthumously awarded the Bronze Cross.

Kornet Limburg Stirum is buried in Zutphen General Cemetery.
