Leonard William Almquist was from Michigan, U.S.A. He had
three younger brothers and a younger sister. He joined the R.C.A.F. when he couldn't become a pilot in the USAAF because he didn't have a college degree.

He became a pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force and was sent to the United Kingdom and was posted to 407 Squadron R.C.A.F.

P/O Almquist was lost on 15 December 1941. He and his  crew, P/O Percy Ford, Sgt Wilfred Turley and P/O James Bitcon flew a Hudson III light bomber, coded AM731, on a anti shipping mission along the Dutch coast.

At this time it is not known how or where they were lost.



407 Sqn RCAF

Sergeant Turley's body was recovered and buried in Usquert. P/O Ford is buried in Vlieland General Cemetery. P/O Almquist and P/O Bitcon are still missing and commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
