Daniel Holland McLeod was born in 1916 in Edinburgh. He was the son of William and Katherine Holland McLeod. His mother died and his father remarried to Sarah McLeod.

After joining the Royal Air Force, he became a pilot on mosquito's with 487 Squadron Royal New Zealand Air Force, operating out of Thorney Island, Sussex.

On 18 November 1944 his was one of 37 mosquitoes sent on an Intruder mission to Northeast Netherlands, East of the battle front and North East of the Ruhr area. 33 attacked targets. 487 Squadron lost two mosquitoes this night. One was shot down by a night fighter and crashed in Germany. The mosquito of F/L McLeod and his navigator, whose name is not known at this time, crashed near the town of Gorssel. His navigator managed to bail out in time.

F/L McLeod is buried in Gorssel General Cemetery, Row A. Grave 22.
