It had been determined by patrol action that Bitterfeld would be heavily defended by its 1,500 troops. To insure the complete destruction of the enemy forces within the city, Col. Cochran had directed a bold maneuver. Heavy fighting took place on the western and southern approaches to the city. The resistance was characterized by the unusually large number of pauzerfausts employed. Once in the city the troops met continued heavy small-arms, machine gun, pamzerfaust and moderate artillery fire from the 1,500 defenders. During the 36 hour battle that ended at 15.36 on 21 april,  several counterattacks had been repulsed and more than 900 prisoners were taken."

The exact circumstances of the death of Pvt Alio are unknown.

After the war Pvt Alio was re-interred at Margraten Military Cemetery, Plot C Row 20 Grave 7.
