R. Anderson

18 November  1944

Not much is known about George R. Anderson. George was from Ely, Minnesota.

After training he was attached to Company F, 406th Infantry Regiment, 102nd Infantry Division. The Division arrived in Europe in 1944 and saw action in Holland and Germany.

In November 1944, the 406th was near Immeldorf, Germany. This was part of a great battle, later called the battle for Aachen or the Ruhr. This was a large industrialized area that was instrumental for the Germans to keep their war effort going. Many American divisions saw combat in this are, which the Germans defended feriously.

On 17 November the 2nd Battalion of the 406th, including Company F, were at Immeldorf in Germany, fighting off German counter attacks and artillery barrages, while themselves preparing to attack the town of Apweiler, which was taken the next day, 18th November.
