Kenneth D. Smith was born in 1924 in Texas. He moved to San Diego, California and enlisted in the U.S. Army on 23 February 1943.

Not much is known about Kenneth and his time with the 5th Infantry Division. It is known that he was wounded once before he that he was killed on 12 April 1945 in the Ruhr pocket.

His unit, the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the 5th Infantry Division had landed on Utah Beach in Normandy on July 9, 1944 and had been in combat since July 14th. The 5th was ordered up to the Ruhr pocket from the south and attached to III Corps from XX Corps on April 7 1945.

The division was needed to help fight three German divisions in the Ruhr pocket which posed a major obstacle to the thrust into Germany. The three divisions were finally defeated on April 23rd.

Pfc Kenneth Smith was killed on 12 April 1945 under unknown circumstances. Also killed this day was Major R. Whiteside, of the 2nd Infantry.

Pfc Kenneth Smith is buried at Margraten Military Cemetery, Plot L Row 16 Grave 1.
